Do you know what this means? The sunshine state has the largest concentration of freshwater springs in the world. Focusing on the natural side of things on our road trip in Florida this year, we put Silver Springs State Park on the itinerary.
A glass-bottom boat is a boat with one or more sections of glass, or other suitable transparent material, below the waterline allowing passengers to observe the underwater environment from within the boat. When a boat is a glass bottom, the view through is better than simply looking into the water from above, because one does not have to look through optically erratic surface disturbances. The effect is similar to that achieved by a diving maskwhile the passengers are able to stay dry, out of the water.
A day of boating is always fun—skimming above the water, catching glimpses of wildlife in the trees and on the riverbanks. These innovative boats were first invented in the late 19th century. Silver Springs is located just east of Ocala in Marion County.
Crowds are once again seeking the pleasures of this old Florida attraction, and new protection and upgrades have been completed since the park's transition to state management. Animal exhibits, rides and a water park joined the glass-bottom boats, from which visitors still eye fish and fossils beneath the surface, and turtles, alligators and myriad birds above it. The state bought the land in the s and created Silver River State Parkleasing the springs and attraction to a private company.
